Can Smart Transportaiton Investments Fatten Our Wallets?
On May 4 from 12noon to 1:30 pm at St. Charles Medical Center, economist Joe Cortright and transportation expert John Robert Smith will discuss how transportation investments can be targeted to bolster economic growth, create jobs, foster development and support community health. Kirk Schueler, Chief Administrative Officer of Saint Charles Health System, will provide opening remarks. The event includes lunch and costs $10. Featured speakers:
Joe Cortright is President and Principal Economist for Impresa, senior policy advisor for CEOs for Cities, and chair of the Oregon Governor's Council of Economic Advisors. Cortright has completed several influential transportation studies, including a 2007 study describing the Portland region's one billion dollar "green dividend" from smart growth land use policies and investments in public transportation infrastructure.
John Robert Smith is President and CEO of Reconnecting America and is known for his role as an early practitioner of transit-oriented development. As four-term Republican mayor of Meridian Mississippi (pop. 38,232) from 1993 to 2009, Smith successfully renovated Meridian's historic downtown train station, a project that helped leverage the revitalization of Meridian's downtown.
