Slow Food on Film: "The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil"

Delancey Street Theater
San Francisco, CA

Please join us for a screening of "The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil" followed by a panel discussion with sustainable food system author-activist Jason Mark. Reception to follow.

When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half - and food by 80 percent - people were desperate. This film tells how they transitioned from highly mechanized agriculture to using organic farming and urban gardens. It is an unusual look into the Cuban culture during this economic crisis. Today, Cuba is the only country in the world that has switched to almost total organic farming.

Jason Mark is an author-activist engaged in the movement for a sustainable food system. He is a co-manager at Alemany Farm, San Francisco's largest food production site. He is also the editor of the environmental quarterly, Earth Island Journal. His Spring 2007 Earth Island cover story profiled urban, organic agriculture in Cuba.

Date:
Saturday July 14th, 2007

Time:
Screening and panel discussion - 6:30pm

Note: Cost: $15 Slow Food members $20 Non-members The Delancey Street Theater does not have any theater marquee or lighted signage that tells you you're at the correct location. The theater is not visible from the street, as it is in the middle of a large residential apartment complex that shows no signs of any movie theater type structure. The only sign that shows you are in the right place is the "600" Embarcadero address, next to a large gated entrance. This is half a block away from the Delancey Street Restaurant, on the corner of Embarcadero and Brannan Streets. If you have never been to this location before, please be sure to arrive early to allow sufficient time to pick up tickets for your screening.
