SIMA Presents: MAHISHASURA MARDINI
Mahishasura Mardini, the story of the Goddess Durga's victory over the demon Mahishasura, represents the ultimate victory of light over the darkness of the universe. As the light of the fall fades into the gloom of the winter in the Pacific Northwest, this story is a reminder that all natural processes in the universe are cyclical. That the gloom must inevitably give way to light. Just as anger, ignorance, hatred and ill will towards others, must inevitably give way to the better natures within us.
The vocal students of SIMA, after having studied for three years, have increasingly gained their footing in this music. This year they take on the extraordinary challenge of producing a significant work of music, recitation and artistic expression, a feat they will pull off with the sustained support and involvement of their colleagues in instrumental and percussive music. Based on the Bengali adaptation of the Mahishasura Mardini Stotra, often referred to as Mahalaya, this production heralds the coming of the Mother Goddess to the earth, to defeat her demonic adversary, and to rid the world of darkness.
