Exhibition Lecture - Weird, Wild & Wonderful: Do you 'See' Plants? Using Art and Technology to Teach Science
Lecture by Jodie Holt, professor of plant physiology at the University of California, Riverside, and botanical consultant for James Cameron's science fiction film "Avatar".
Dr. Holt, who in real life specializes in invasive species, found herself in a unique position as a botanical consultant for James Cameron's science fiction blockbuster "Avatar," providing advice on the botany and plant life found on Pandora. She was the botanist role model for Grace Augustine, played by Sigourney Weaver, and coached her on how a field botanist would go about studying plant physiology. Later, she contributed to a field guide for Pandora called "Avatar: A Confidential Report on the Biological and Social History of Pandora (An Activist Survival Guide)," writing a flora of Pandora and creating scientific names for the flora and fauna. Dr. Holt talks about how her work provided a unique opportunity to bring her knowledge and love of plant biology to the public by way of popular media. Dr. Holt's keynote is being underwritten by BAGSC.
