Description:
A sculptor, Linda Hoffman never expected to become an organic apple grower until she moved to a farmhouse in Harvard, Massachusetts with an old orchard. The first time she walked through the orchard, she couldn't find any fruit. Wild sumac and thorny brambles crawled between the trees, and poison ivy vines snaked around the gnarled trunks. It hadn't been tended for years. She decided she would bring the trees back and do it organically. With the help of some good mentors, in 2006 Old Frog Pond became the first pick your own certified organic orchard in the state.

Spend the afternoon with Linda in the orchard, where over fifty varieties of apples are growing.  She will discuss her yearly schedule of care, show how she has grafted a number of rows to change Red Delicious trees to new varieties, and share all things practical about planting, staking, and protecting young trees. You will also walk through the farm's new Asian pear orchard and learn about growing this delicious fruit.

There may even be some fruit to taste. The disease resistant Pristine apple and maybe even the Shinsui Asian pear might be ready to pick.

About the presenter:
Linda Hoffman has been part of the New England art community since the early 1980's. Her work is at the intersection of art, agriculture, and the natural world, and includes indoor and outdoor sculpture, public installations, digital prints, and three chapbooks of poetry. She is the fruit grower at Old Frog Pond Farm, , a certified organic farm and NOFA/Mass member, in Harvard, Massachusetts, where she continues to explore natural and harmonious ways to grow fruit as well as cultivate her art. Hoffman belongs to a group of New England holistic apple growers who share their approaches for growing apples. In the fall, visitors can pick certified organic apples and raspberries, and tour the farm's annual outdoor sculpture exhibit.
