Regina Carter's "Reverse Thread" at the Bellevue Jazz Festival
Preeminent violinist Regina Carter first came into the spotlight for her work in the all female pop-jazz quintet Straight Ahead. In 2006,Carter was awarded a MacArthur Fellows Program grant, which armed her with the funds and the freedom to follow her muse and create the arrangements for her latest release Reverse Thread. Carter made the decision to record this album primarily influenced by African folk tunes. To achieve the uplifting and stirring result, she added an accordion and kora, the West African harp traditionally played by village storytellers, to her longstanding rhythm section. Kora virtuoso Yacouba Sissoko was brought on board to help recreate the spirit of passing stories from generation to generation. Also joining Carter will be Will Holshouser on accordion, Chris Lightcap on bass and Alvester Garnett on drums and percussion. The result is a beautiful complement to Carter's sumptuously seductive violin. With Reverse Thread, Carter takes a giant step forward by making a meaningful musical contribution on her own terms. Carter has repeatedly toured throughout the world, been featured with several symphony orchestras and performed with artists as diverse as Aretha Franklin, Lauryn Hill, Billy Joel, Kenny Barron and Mary J. Blige. Regina Carter will perform compositions from Reverse Thread on Wednesday, June 1, at 7:30 p.m.
