Bats of Point Reyes
Bat biologist Gary Fellers will give a fascinating presentation on the bats of Point Reyes: where they live, how they migrate, what they eat, and their conservation status. See a demonstration of research equipment for capturing and studying bats (e.g. harp traps, mists nets), and possibly a live bat. As it begins to get dark, Gary will set up an ultrasonic bat detector that makes it possible to hear bat vocalizations that normally fall outside the range of human hearing. As the bats begin to vocalize, participants will have a chance to glimpse them as they fly in the twilight. All activities are planned for the Red Barn, but if bat activity that week dictates, the group may spend the last part of the evening at Five Brooks Pond, about 5 miles south. Guide: Gary Fellers Event location: Red Barn Classroom, Point Reyes National Seashore headquarters, Olema What to bring: Warm clothes, small flashlight, and possibly transportation to Five Brooks Pond Limited to 40 participants Target bird or species information: Local bats, including big brown bats, California myotis, and free-tailed bats.
