Birding by Bike at Bolinas
Birding by Bicycle! An Introduction to Birding by Bicycle: The Bountiful Habitats of Bolinas. Whether you are a beginning birder or have been at it for decades, bicycling adds a whole new dimension to the pursuit and study of birds. This trip aims to encourage birders of all abilities to get back into the saddle. But do not fear, this is not a race or endurance event.he pace will be leisurely as the group pedals through the many quiet roads and trails nearby. Bolinas is rich in diversity and abundance and there is no better way to experience those qualities than by bicycle.
With so many habitats all mashed together, participants will take advantage of the opportunity to visit at least seven distinct habitat types and learn a bit about the plant communities therein. Being the height of spring, bird birdsong and bird detectability will be at their peak. As it happens, bird diversity is also at its peak during this period. The group will make frequent stops on migration to search out as many species as possible, as we have a chance to observe 100 or more species. Josiah will carry a spotting scope.
The outing will begin with some basic birding-cycling safety tips. This field trip is geared for beginning cyclists, with only a few small hills (that we can walk if we have to). Participants must be familiar with how to ride and operate a bicycle. This ride will cover about 10-12 miles over the course of the day.
Participants must have binoculars and should dress in layers and be prepared for the day's conditions, but carry only what they will need. Extra items can be carried in a small backpack, fanny pack or saddlebag. A good way to carry a spotting scope is to have the tripod on a rear rack and the scope in a backpack.
