Birding Drakes Estero
This trail through open grassland offers outstanding views of Drakes Estero and Limantour Estero and of locally rich bird life. The Home Ranch is located at the northern end of Drakes Estero, and the area around it offers a number of quality habitats. Look for waterfowl, shorebirds, and raptors as well as resident and migratory land birds. Guide: Ian Morrison Carpool from: Dance Palace Community Center, 503 B Street, Point Reyes Station, at 10:30 am Event location: Starts at Estero Trail parking area. To reach the trailhead, drive toward the Lighthouse on Sir Francis Drake Blvd; turn left where a sign points toward the Estero Trail, about two miles past the Pierce Point Road turnoff on the right. Continue approximately 1 mile to the parking lot. Easy trail walking. What to bring: Binoculars; spotting scope, if possible; hiking boots; warm clothing; water; lunch Limited to 15 participants Target bird or species information: Grasshopper sparrows; migrant shorebirds and songbirds; tule elk; coyote; bobcats
