Event
ASCE Seattle P&H Committee Monthly Meeting, November 10, 2010
Speakers
David S. Phelps, MASCE, PE - GeoEngineers
Garry H. Squires, MASCE, PE, LEG - GeoEngineers
The presentation will describe stone column ground improvement programs implemented for two marginal wharf structures at the Port of Tacoma, Washington. Liquefaction and slope stability modeling results and expected performance of the wharf structures under seismic loading will be discussed. Considerations regarding construction sequence, ground improvement location and effectiveness, and other construction considerations will also be discussed.
David S. Phelps has been a consulting geotechnical engineer in the Pacific Northwest since 1993 and has been with GeoEngineers in Tacoma, Washington since 1997. His project experience includes conducting subsurface investigations, completing engineering analyses and design and providing construction observation for geotechnical aspects of site development, ground improvement and foundation design related to local, national and international intermodal facilities and pier and wharf structures. David co-authored the ASCE Ports 2007 paper "Stone Columns for Underwater Wall Stability" and the ASCE Ports 2010 paper "Structural-Geotechnical Procedures for New Wharf Design."
Garry H. Squires has been a consulting geotechnical engineer in the Pacific Northwest since 1985 and has been with GeoEngineers in Tacoma, Washington since 1994. He has planned, managed and executed small to large geotechnical investigations for site improvements including marginal wharf structures, bridges, commercial and municipal buildings, and utility infrastructure elements. He has evaluated slope stability and developed recommendations for in situ improvement of soft or loose soil conditions for marine slopes, bridge approach embankments and abutments. He is a member of the Deep Foundations Institute and serves on the driven pile committee of DFI.
