2015 Swamp Tour
DAY CANOE OUTING ON CANE BAYOU
When: Saturday, February 28, 2015
Departure Information: Uptown: will begin loading the bus on Freret Street by the Library at 8:30 a.m. and bus will leave at 8:45 a.m.
Downtown: Bus will arrive at Deming at 9:00 a.m. and will load and leave for Cane Bayou immediately. Return time to campus between 3 and 4 pm.
Where: Our canoe outing will be on Cane Bayou which is a stream that flows into Lake Pontchartrain from the north side. The bayou serves as the eastern boundary for Fontainebleau State Park and the western boundary for Big Branch Marsh National Wildlife Refuge. Cane Bayou is the most natural looking stream of a dozen streams that are tributaries to Lake Pontchartrain.
Cane Bayou flows past a variety of habitats enroute to the lake. The launch site is in piney flatwoods, from there the stream flows past a remnant stand of cypress both living and dead, then past an "intermediate" marsh which features open ponds and narrow waterways and finally out to Lake Pontchartrain.
Paddling Distance: to be about three miles to the lake and back plus side trips.
Attire: should dress for the forecasted weather and wear footwear that can get wet. (Some paddlers like to get out of the canoes and wade around in Lake Pontchartrain.)
How much: The trip fee is $40.00, which includes guide service, the use of the canoes and paddling accessories, and lunch. OISS will provide transportation.
Deadline for Payment: February 20, 2015 If Bad Weather: If bad weather is forecasted in consultation with the coordinator, the outing will be rescheduled to a mutually convenient time. If the outing cannot be rescheduled, trip fees will be refunded.
