Writing and performing solo comedy character scenes is a craft. Unlike standup comedy, it's easy to do because theater audiences are much more forgiving. Like standup comedy, it's extremely hard to do well. If you lack killer written material for yourself, this solo comedy class will get you going. It's also a great start to creating a solo show. The class focuses on crafting structurally sound, multi-layered scenes, creating better characters, being a better actor, and performing with the confidence and discipline of a good stand-up comic.

The Instructor:
Paul Thomas is currently performing his solo show Comedogenic at iO. In the past year he has also taken the show to the New York Fringe and Hollywood Fringe. In 2009 he performed character pieces in the inaugural Just for Laughs Chicago. His solo work also includes the autobiographical questionable love story "Waitress Wanted," which was selected for Live Bait Theater's Fillet of Solo Festival in 2006. He is a former member of the Defiant Thomas Brothers, winners of Best Sketch Group at HBO's 2005 U.S. Comedy Arts Festival and CIF Sketch Artists of the Year. Paul is also a stand-up comedian and is a cast member of Chicago Underground Comedy. Every Thursday he hosts Happy Hour, a solo workshop/show at The Playground Theater.
