This Is How It Goes
Opening August 23rd, The Living Room stretches outside its previous
productions of realism, and into the meta-theatrical world of Neil LaBute's "This Is How It Goes". The story of an interracial couple in a small Midwestern city, whose lives are interupted, explored, and exploited by a Man. The Man is also the narrator of the play, and let's the audience examine "the elusive truths" of this eventual triangle of lust, deceit, and racism.
Staging his work on a continually shifting moral ground where nothing
is sacred and the unexpected is a given, LaBute unblinkingly
challenges the viewers received notions of gender, ethnicity, and
even love itself. Powerful, profane, and above all unpredictable, This
Is How It Goes is a devastating exploration of the myriad ways in
which the wild card of race is played by both black and white in America.
