The Destruments w/ special guests
"DESTRUMENTS is a talented young band that captures the spirit of Tower of Power as well as the current trends in popular urban music. It is exciting for me to see the next generation of R&B coming out of Oakland where I got my start and which remains in a special place in my heart. These guys should be making an impact for years to come and I'm looking forward to watching it."-Stephen"Doc"Kupka(Co-Founder, Bari Sax player & Songwriter for Tower of Power)
"DESTRUMENTS are the latest architects to build on the blossoming foundation that is instrumental Hip Hop, specializing in jazz-funk breaks that come tempo-eclectic...Recommended for head-nod-ders who favor the organix." -(URB Magazine2005/Kevin Polowy)
"Though it may be true that the tracks they cook up are technically "throwbacks", the ingenuity of the music is something to be thankful for simply because it doesn't sound like any specific track you've heard before."-(URB Magazine2007/Joanna Munoz)
"DESTRUMENTS are a three-man hip-hop/soul group hailing from Oakland, CA, and whether smoothed-out on a mellow tip or bright, funky, and full of life, their organic sound is purely pleasurable."-(Okayplayer.com/Mike Gadd)
"DESTRUMENTS fuses their passion for creativity to make genre-bending melodies that range from horn riffed, James Brown-esque funk to almost ambient rhythms."-(Vapors Magazine/Jamilah King)
"DESTRUMENTS distinguishing characteristic is their smoothed-out vibe: part west coast cruising, part smoke-filled jazz club, part dungeon studio."(Turntablelab.com 2008)
There is but one word to describe the versatility of Destruments: Soulful!
Though that word may be somewhat overused these days, there is no question that Destruments' sound is characterized by honest emotion and musical understanding. The multiplicity of textures and rhythms in their music fuse together to produce a unique 'sub-genre' that reflects all forms of soul music.
Fortune and fate played equal parts in the formation, which gave birth to Destruments! It was a natural fit since they have a mutual love of Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk and Jazz music.
Destruments key ingredient is fusing yesterday's bugaloo with tomorrow's beats, trying to connect the bridge between the past and the future. With all members having years of studio and stage experience, the group is as much a production team as they are a live band, digging the creative process in the studio as much as the live energy on stage. Since hooking up in Los Angeles in 2003 and relocating to Oakland in 2006, Destruments has constantly released music. In a short time the ensemble have made a lot of music music which has lead to 6 album releases! And then in 2009 the 2 NEW records off Ivory Soul Records in JapanThe special cover record "Bridge Through Time" & the new LP "Shaped By the Sound". All these releases are a testament to their eclectic tastes and their chemistry, a completely original style that is rare and innovative.
