Frances Perkins Center Annual GARDEN PARTY
Please join us for the Second Annual Frances Perkins Center Garden Party! Beautiful setting, fine food and drink, and great conversation -- it's one of the premiere events of the summer season.

We'll be celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Social Security Act and honoring three amazing people who are following in the footsteps of Frances Perkins, our nation's first female cabinet member and a passionate advocate for economic fairness and social justice.

Our "Intelligence and Courage" Award recipient will be  Brooksley Born, former chair of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Recognizing the dangers of unregulated derivatives trading, she warned about the potential collapse of the financial system, but her warnings were not heeded. Born's attempt to save us from economic disaster is the subject of PBS's Frontline documentary, "The Warning."

Our "Steadfast" Award will go to Nancy Altman, who has been working on Social Security policy since the 1980s, when she worked on the 1983 Greenspan Commission on Social Security as Alan Greenspan's assistant. She has taught at both Harvard's Kennedy School and Law School and is a founder of the National Academy of Social Insurance, on the board of the Pension Rights Center, and co-founder of SocialSecurity-Works.org. Altman is the author of The Battle for Social Security: From FDR's Vision to Bush's Gamble."

Our "Open Door" Award recipient is Megan Williams, executive director of Hardy Girls Healthy Women. Named in 2009 by MaineBiz as one of the ten people shaping the future of Maine's economy, Williams was hired to lead Hardy Girls in 2005, the year after her graduation from Colby College in Waterville, Maine. She has nurtured the nonprofit from its strong but small roots into a flourishing organization with nationally recognized programs and three full-time and one part-time staff members.

Tickets for the Garden Party are limited. All proceeds benefit the nonprofit nonpartisan Frances Perkins Center.
