Thoughts, letters and notes from Atreus were shared with me over a number of years. He was a homeless man living primarily in an outdoor shelter in Seattle. These musings come from a man who was crushed by violence and loss. His reflections give hope to many who find themselves in similar situations living on the outskirts of society. Many of his notes were posted on our Let Kids Be Kids website or shared with groups in order to humanize those we often ignore. His stories of fellow homeless seem to touch a cord with people much more than statistics and bland descriptions of the poor and homeless. His thoughts and observations dovetail with my experiences and insights into a group of people that are often marginalized for their station in society. - M. Barrett Miller
What is Tent City 4?
Tent City 4 is an encampment of up to 100 homeless adults that live as a community on various church grounds around the Eastside for periods of 90 days at a time. The community consists of homeless or formerly homeless individuals and offers an extraordinary opportunity for residents to get off the streets and live in a community that offers safety, a sense of fellowship and community, and some of the basic necessities such as food and sanitation, including showers. Tent City 4 was started in 2004 and is in part supported by SHARE/WHEEL. This organization works with Tent City 4 to secure locations to live and their budget contribution covers some basic costs such as sanitation, refuse pick up, and bus pass allocation as many of the residents need access to transportation for jobs and services.
The hosting of Tent City 4 at the Community Church of Issaquah (CCI) is being organized and supported by the Issaquah Sammamish Interfaith Coalition (ISIC), of which CCI is a member. All people of faith in Issaquah and Sammamish are invited to join ISIC to get involved in projects for the good of our communitiesprojects that would overwhelm lone individuals, single congregations or organizations.
