"Connect: Four Short Plays" by Austin playwright Allan Baker
"Connect: Four Short Plays", by Austin playwright Allan Baker, will open for a three week run at the Off Center on Thursday, April 1st. Benefiting AIDS Services of Austin, OutYouth Austin and the Equality Texas Foundation, the production consists of four short one-act plays, directed by Theresa Leckbee.
The evening opens on a light note with "Click". It's Saturday night and two gay guys are online, trying to hook up, each for a somewhat different reason. With Adam Pearson and James Jackson Leach.
"Voices" follows, with a conversation across four generations, among five members of a family, all residents of a cemetery in rural Texas. Taking "Our Town" in a new direction, the play focuses on Martha, the ninety-seven year old matriarch of a Texas family, born in the 1860s, and how she deals the the two most recent arrivals at the cemetery: Cole, a relatively young, gay victim of AIDS and Peggy, here seventy-five year old, oft married, spirited and rather bohemian granddaughter. With Kirk Burg, Trey Townsend, Suzanne Kennedy, Alexa Doggett and Sharon Elmore.
The third play of the evening is the powerful "Five Minutes". A 2006 Austin FronteraFest "Best of the Fest" selection, this play was produced Off Off-Broadway in 2006 and 2007. "Sometimes five minutes is a lifetime. And sometimes love can take you to a safe place when nothing else can." With Gina Houston, Feliz Dia McDonald, Sean Stogner, Franc Frye, Blake Smith and Jude Hickey.
The last play is "A Midsummer Night's Conversation". It's four months into the relationship and a gay couple must face a critical moment. It's a time for honesty, intimacy and total self-exposure. And one of the two is an actor...a very good actor. With James Jackson Leach and Jude Hickey. (Advisory: nudity.)
