TRUCE
What if the windows to your soul were closing? Who would you blame? How would you fight? TRUCE is the inspiring true story of one extraordinary woman's struggle to make sense of her impending blindness. At once empowering, hysterical, honest, and heart-wrenching, award-winning Bay Area actress Marilee Talkington takes you on an unforgettable and experiential journey into a world of brilliant darkness and really blurry sex.
TRUCE first opened in New York City in 2006 garnering rave reviews and astonishing audiences with its biting humor and rare exploration of the unseen world of blindness. "Sublimely theatrical, hyper-sensual, and hilarious, TRUCE is oriented to emotions through sound and touch that might cause a seeing person to marvel" - NYTheatre.com. Initially directed by Princess Grace Nominee Justin Quinn Pelegano, the San Francisco production will be lead by up-and-coming local director, Marissa Wolf. The ingenious set and lighting design by award-winning New York Production Designer, Andrew Lu, brings the physical experience of going blind to Bay Area audiences.
Artistic Director of Vanguardian Productions and one of only two legally blind actors in America to hold an M.F.A. in Acting, Talkington brings a rare perspective to the theatrical craft by writing and creating new works that engage the audiences in wholly sensorial ways. "Marilee is a force to be reckoned with," says Ms. Wolf. "Her open, honest, immediacy as an actor and her rigor and vision as an artistic collaborator offer an incredible vitality. This presence, coupled with the autobiographical nature of TRUCE, make this one of the Bay Area's most unique and compelling stories being told on stage now."
Vanguardian Productions was founded in 2001 and has been developing new and visceral works in the U.S. and abroad since. A San Francisco native herself, Talkington has brought Vanguardian home to the Bay Area, to help further the company's exploration of experiential theatre. "San Francisco is one of the most progressive thinking cities in the world. If a blind Artistic Director can't push the envelope here, where can it be done?" asks Ms. Talkington.
TRUCE was chosen to be reworked (TBA CA$H Grant recipient) and remounted as Vanguardian's 'coming out' production in the Bay Area as it fully embodies and crystallizes the company's mission: To give voice and vision to the unique perspectives so often overlooked and unexperienced. To marry profound and innovative stories with highly visceral and sense-oriented production design. To bring theatre beyond vision into a new realm of realization.
