Being Human - Exploring the Psyche through Poetry and Performance
Our personal growth consists largely of how we communicate to ourselves and others. This course aims to provide methods to categorise and accept elements of our own process and psyche, while simultaneously teaching methods of how to communicate it creatively. This is because if you can write a poem on it, you can certainly do it in plain English if the need arises. And it all starts with understanding how we relate to ourselves and with our unconscious processes and pathologies.

This is a four week course designed to explore ideas, emotions and philosophies central to the human condition. It is a fun and interactive environment, using games, open discussions and performance to build confidence in our own process and communication skills.

The final product of the course will be a small intimate event we put on together where people can read their poetry and share.

About the teacher:

Patrick Sharkey is qualified in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and is a hairs breadth from being a fully accredited counsellor. He has an honours degree in Philosophy and History. He draws largely from Jungian Theory, and has privately studied human nature, from Neurology to Spirituality, for most his adult life.

He is a performance poet, who goes by the name Dr. Philosophancipants, most recently having performed at Buddhafield Festival. His self-published book is on sale at the Co-exist shop.

He has also worked as a trainer and mentor in public speaking, emotive communication, and communication skills.

He has given many public talks on human nature, always choosing ways to affirm the whole of our nature's, and finding peace in both the negative and positive. Spending much of his life as a teacher, therapist and volunteer for humanitarian institutions trying to empower people and allow them space and room to come to terms with themselves in a light-hearted and often comical way, but always giving gravity where gravity is due.

Course structure:

Nov 1st:
A poetry games session to get to know each other better, to play some fun word games a build a sense of togetherness with those who are part of the course. It is encouraged that people bring some poetry to read or perform, as there will be an opening at the end for people to share some work, or even just share what they would like to achieve.

Nov 8th: Loves
This will be the first thing we look into, a nice ease in as who doesn't like exploring what they love?
We will discuss the idea of love, it's multifarious nature and what it means to us, so we can put it into words and share the most beautiful and affirming aspects of our trips round the sun in our glorious meat suit.

Nov 15th: Fears
Here we go a bit deeper: into our fears. Those soft squidgy bits we are so encouraged to hide. Here we can bring them out, get them into a form where they are outside ourselves, and whether people want to communicate them or not, people can share them and realise how human it is to be afraid, worried and anxious. And how using poetry and sharing we can come to terms with them as part of life.

Nov 22nd: Jungian Shadow
This is where we start looking at deeper levels of understanding towards how we form relationships with ourselves and others. An introductory and simply look at Jung's concept of the shadow self, and how this is great fodder for self-exploration and already in itself an amazing metaphor which can be applied to poetry. A concept which is one of the most important to come along for therapies and bringing people together ever.

Nov 29th: Inner child
A cliche perhaps, but one of the most valuable tools of understanding our unconscious, creating dialogues with the inner child is a way of finding self-compassion and comfort for things we otherwise might condemn in ourselves. It is learning to love and accept the irrational, a great source of poetic dialogue, and way to tap into things we often repress, and another fruitful metaphor to be played with.

There is only space for 15 people on the course. So get in quickly!
