Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series presents Rob Clearfield Trio !

Chicago-based pianist Rob Clearfield returns to Merriman's Playhouse with a new trio featuring bassist Junius Paul (Art Ensemble of Chicago) and drummer Marcus Evans (Prefuse 73). Drawing on his love of simple songs, the richness of jazz harmonies and rhythms, and the pianistic subtleties, Clearfields new album "Wherever You're Starting From" explores improvisation rooted in compositional integrity and personal vulnerability.

Rob Clearfield is a pianist, composer, and improviser who has performed his own original music across the United States. He has also performed and collaborated with many artists including Patricia Barber, Marquis Hill, Eighth Blackbird, Makaya McCraven, Greg Ward, Grazyna Auguscik, Rogerio Boccato, Howard Levy, John Wetton, Fareed Haque, Matt Ulery, Itamar Borochov, Adam Larson, Caroline Davis, and more. A Brief Word From the Artist:
"When I was little I used to sit at the piano and press the keys, just to hear what would happen. My parents signed me up for lessons and as I learned to play, I often spent time making stuff up; pressing the keys and seeing what I could come up with. Before I wrote my first song, before I got into jazz, I dreamed of sitting down at the piano and playing a complete song on the spot. No plan, no preconception, just a pure idea with a beginning, middle, and end. My stream-of-consciousness song would have the nuanced development of a meticulously revised composition and the emotional rigor of a deeply personal song, while still overflowing with the immediacy and expressiveness of improvisation.
