WERU Songwriters' Round: Viva, Jenny Lou Drew, and Adam Nordell
Blue Hill, MAINE  WERU Community Radio announces a songwriter-focused, multi-artist live music show at Barncastle beginning at 7PM on Saturday August 20 in Blue Hill.
Three musicians converge on the Barncastles cozy stage to perform in the Nashville tradition of a songwriters round,'' in which a group of writers perform in a round-robin style sharing original songs and some of the stories behind them. A variety of voices will be represented in this offering: Viva, Adam Nordell, and Jenny Lou Drew.
Viva is a singer, bandleader, activist, and multi-dimensional artist who currently sings Jazz standards and Latin tunes with a modern twist in Portland, Maine, all around New England and Latin America, and wherever her music will take her. Viva is the granddaughter of economist Alfred P Thorne, author of Poor By Design, a book that examines systemic exploitation of former colonial states, and the great-granddaughter of A A Thorne, a human rights advocate and the first person of African descent in the world to earn both bachelor's and advanced graduate degrees conferred by a British University. This legacy informs Vivas values of education access, civic participation, and intersectional feminism. She was an Indigo Arts Alliance Artist-In-Residence in 2021. Jenny Lou Drew is a Award-winning songwriter and self-taught fingerstyle guitarist from the deep woods of Maine. Her voice draws comparisons that run the gamut from Janis Joplin to Bonnie Raitt and Norah Jones. She has been building a solid repertoire and performance history in Maine for over a decade. Adam Nordell is a roots oriented songwriter who performs evocative and sometimes playful place-based songs on guitar and banjo.  Nordell has performed his songs alongside traditional fiddle tunes as part of touring folk group Sassafras Stomp for the since 2010.  During that time he's had opportunity to perform for listeners and dancers across much of the US and occasionally in central-eastern Canada.  Nordell and wife, fiddler Johanna Davis, ran an organic vegetable and grain farm called Songbird Farm in Unity, ME until this winter, when they were knocked out of production by the discovery of historic chemical contamination on their land.   Nordell brings a philosophical perspective to this experience, and weaves stories of farmland, the changing world, and an irreverent hopefulness though his songs.
