About Anna Ash

Anna Ash writes songs of profound, startling, sensuous insight. Her new album, Sleeper, is infused with an emotional intelligence that conjures nostalgia with the memory of a middle school boyfriends cologne, and evokes a tenderness specific to L.A. in an evening full of car alarms, fireworks, and the rare California lilac. But she knows, too, that such knowledge will not spare her from heartache, from the weight of the past, from the wildfire drawing ever closer. Rueful, wise, sardonic, Sleeper plays like a Sally Rooney book if the novelist could palm-mute a Silvertone and launch her voice into cathartic falsettos.

Ashs songs regularly feature on soundtracks (Billions, Masters of Sex) and curated playlists (Fresh Folk, Noir) and her fans will recognize that trademark textured guitar and soaring voice. On Sleeper, though, the tight pocket of previous albums gives way to more spacious arrangements and atmospherics  buoyant keys, group harmonies, pedal steel and horns. This is her fourth album, and first on Oklahoma indie label Black Mesa Records. Ash recorded the album in two sessions: The first in November 2020, amid the uncertainty of the pandemic; the second in April 2021, as the world started to re-open and gathering a band in a studio became a more viable option. The first took place in the Catskills, the second back in LA, both recorded live to tape. And you hear it on the album  theres an urgency, an immediacy to the album, as if Ash is processing this perilous moment (and all the ones before) in real-time. Sleeper, then, is a soundtrack of sorts, trenchant songs to score the moments when memories play life movies and the fire is at your door.

About Alex Dupree

Alex Dupree is a published poet and songwriter living in Austin, TX. In the mid 00s, he founded the Trapdoor Band, an improvisatory folk group and vehicle for his lyric-driven songwriting. He released three albums under that name before switching to the Idyl moniker in 2009. During this time, he also played guitar in Zookeeper, the new folk-rock project of Austin emo pioneer Chris Simpson (Mineral, The Gloria Record, Mountain Time).

After two more albums as Idyl, Dupree moved to California to focus on poetry, studying and teaching at UC Irvine, with songwriting never far from his mind. He continued to hone his craft writing country songs for the LA band Mister Paradise and a duet project with Whitney Mower (They/Live) called Dawn & Dupree. Despite a deep love for country music, Duprees songs never quite settle in that category though, absorbing additional influences from the likes of Laurie Anderson, Arthur Russell, Bjork, and John Cale.

2017s You Winsome, You Lonesome was the first album Alex Dupree released under his own name. His new project Thieves  out July 15, 2022  was produced by Michael Krassner (Califone, Simon Joyner, Boxhead Ensemble) and features a cast of LA musicians such as Max Knouse and Stephen Hodges (Tom Waits, Mavis Staples) alongside Trapdoor Band regulars like Aisha Burns and Matt Matherne.

Thieves finds Dupree returning to the root of his fascination with folk ballads to deliver songs of timeless storytelling. Think Bill Callahan meets Willie Nelson. Or Harry Smith meets Barry Hannah. The songs introduce a motley cast of characters who, in Duprees voice, combine to tell the story of a single self. Taken together, the wide-ranging stories of Thieves feel deeply confessional, an idiosyncratic folklore of identity and rebirth.
