An Evening of Afghan Culture and Food
New Milford Refugee Resettlement (NMRR) welcomes the Malikizada family to New Milford with an evening of Afghan food and a silent auction of Matin Malikizada's pottery. Matin is a seventh-generation Afghan master of traditional pottery, internationally recognized for his technical skill and elegant designs. A native of Istalif, Afghanistan, once a vibrant center of ceramic art and commerce, he was forced to flee Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover. Along with his family, he is now resettled in Northwest Connecticut where he continues his journey as an artist. In Afghanistan, Matin served as head of the Turquoise Mountain Institute's ceramics department has shown his work around the world including at the Smithsonian, Philadelphia Art Museum, Buckingham Palace, Japan International Museum, and Davos. Matin already is garnering accolades from the local pottery elite, such as Guy Woff, who calls his work "serious mastery." The evening, from 5 to 7 p.m., will include traditional Afghan food and an opportunity to examine his work and take some home through a silent auction.
