TB or Not TB
"TB or Not TB" is a macabre romp through the sanatorium industry that redefined New Mexico's cultural landscape 100 years ago. A common "cure" for tuberculosis in the early 20th century was to recuperate in a high dry climate, and a cottage industry of sanatoriums seized on this prescription. The resulting influx of "lungers," as they were called, completely altered New Mexico's demography. Choreographer and performer Emmaly Wiederholt's great grandfather was one such lunger who came to New Mexico from Cincinnati in 1920. In "TB or Not TB," Emmaly and her nurse, played by Jaden Chavez, take the audience inside the sanatorium to explore the absurdity and misery of the environment.
