Best of the Bluff, Year Two: To the Distant Beloved
Beethovens letter to his Immortal Beloved was found unsent after his death, and scholars are still mystified by the identity of the woman who clearly captured the emotions of the composer. Beethoven also poured his feelings into the first-ever song cycle, the last song of which was a direct inspiration for Schumann, who composed his great Fantasy while separated from his own beloved, Clara Wieck. In a letter accompanying the music, Schumann wrote to Clara: The first movement may well be the most passionate I have ever composed a deep lament for you. David Stock was a featured composer on the 20152016 Bluff series, and we pay a memorial tribute to him with a performance of his Eitz Chayim (Tree of Life).
