Dark Sky West Marin - August
DARK SKY WEST MARIN WITH DON JOLLEY
Help preserve the Point Reyes nightscape! A monthly event to benefit Dark Sky West Marin!
Make yourself comfortable under the night sky, learn names of planets, stars, constellations and hear thousand-year-old stories about billions and billions of celestial bodies.
Spend an evening under the stars with astronomy teacher and storyteller extraordinaire Don Jolley of Point Reyes Station. Join the Point Reyes Station Village Association Lighting Committee and support its work to preserve the local nightscape. The best view of the stars over West Marin is just before the new moon. The event will occur on the first clear night between July 30 and August 8, 2021, the new moon.
Naked eye astronomy. Participants will walk out to the Giacomini Wetlands, gaze upward, and discover the secrets of our June sky. Don't worry. If you can't make it the night we call your ticket(s) will be suitable for any future monthly Dark Sky West Marin events.
Dark Sky preservation work includes efforts to help property/business owners/managers lessen light pollution and light trespass, qualify West Marin as an International Dark Sky Community (darksky.org), and update Marin County Lighting regulations.
Location: Giacomini Wetlands Barn
Tickets $10-$20 to benefit Dark Sky project. We'll call or email around 8 pm when the night is clear.
Things to bring:
Warm clothes
Chair, blanket, or sleeping roll
Print out of night sky map with names on it.
Flashlight prepared as in instructions or
Red lamp (per instructions)
Your curiosity
A headlamp with a red bulb option will work just fine. Or, modify an ordinary flashlight to be red-filtered: Cover the flashlight's lens with masking tape, and color the tape with a red marker, like a Sharpie or red crayon. It may take a few layers of tape and marker to get the light to quiet down. You'll want enough light to read your star chart in the dark, but not so much that it blinds your eyes to the stars.
