Wild Honey Presents Carmaig de Forest & Dead Rock West, A Benefit Concert
Wild Honey's very first backyard show since 2019 is coming!   Dead Rock West and Carmaig de Forest will be making their backyard debuts in this vaccine-only event.

Proof of full vaccination (two weeks past the final shot) will be required for entry. No exceptions.

Music begins at 4pm.  Each act will play for about 60 minutes, give or take.   Please listen to both bands.  $40  Standing in the driveway and talking loudly during one set or the other is NOT acceptable behavior and don't be offended when you are politely told so by a member of the Wild Honey team.  There is plenty of time for conversation before the show, during intermission, and afterwards.  We have been without live Wild Honey music since the Lovin' Spoonful show on Feb 29th, 2020, so let's savor each moment of both acts from our seats.

DEAD ROCK WEST--the acclaimed California alt-country rock group fronted by Cindy Wasserman and Frank Lee Drennenare heading into 2018 with an array of tour dates. Their recently released album MORE LOVE (August 2017 via Omnivore Recordings) was produced by John Doe of X who helped create an album that places Wasserman and Drennens  achingly beautiful signature vocals and harmonies in finely etched rock, alt-country and pop settings.

The sound is both contemporary and timeless. Click here to listen to Boundless Fearless Love, a joyously infectious standout from the album which was praised by Randy Lewis of Los Angeles Times Pop & Hiss as he premiered the song (6/21/17) and noted it is set to a propellant track thats part R.E.M., part Tom Petty and part Neil Young

Says John Doe: They have combined all of the influences (alt-country, gospel, Everly Bros) from their previous records into this one. Great songs. Great playing. Wonderful performances. More Love is heart & soul from two deeply original singers & songwriters. Doe adds: Somehow Cindy & Frank connect the dots between '70 country & '60 soul music. They are a modern day Gram & Emmylou singing songs that Otis & Carla would sing.

Carmaig de Forest

The ukulele-playing post-punk-folk-punk writer/performer has been holding forth since 1982. He's one of those ahead-of-his-time cult figures boasting a relatively small but truly amazing back catalog with a backstory punctuated by creative encounters and collaborations with legit rock icons. Currently living and raising a family in the Pacific Northwest, Carmaig returns to Los Angeles to belatedly celebrate I Shall Be Re-Released, Omnivore Recordings bonus-track-laden reissue of Carmaig's long lost 1987 debut LP. To recreate that albums original sound, Carmaig will be backed by guitarist Haskel Joseph, bassist Ned Doherty, and drummer Will Rigby, all veterans of Carmaig's back-in-the-day DeathGrooveLovePartya roster of musicians from which CdF would assemble touring bands back in the day.

But if you've never heard of Carmaig de Forest, you are not alone. And now is as good a time to become a fan as it was 40 years ago. Here's friend of Wild Honey Foundation Todd Lawrence two cents:

Decades before your teenage daughter made the ukulele into a fashion accessory, there was Carmaig de Forest. I remember hearing about him back in the day. This leather jacketed guy with a crew cut, a uke and a bag of songs that drew more from Charles Bukowski than Tiny Tim.

Carmaig laughs it off when I describe him as brave. But what else can you call it when a guy, opening up for the likes of Violent Femmes, the Ramones, or the Residents, stands in front of a large crowd with nothing but a tiny ukulele and sings a song admonishing John Hinkley for not getting the job done?

I have to think thats what drew Alex Chilton to see him as kindred spirit, producing Carmaigs recently re-issued debut album, I Shall Be Released. But more than that, Chilton acted as a kind of mentor and champion to him, teaching him how to lead a band and expand his sound beyond the ukulele - then introducing him to some of the best musicians alive to carry that sound forward.

The other important mentor in Carmaigs artistic life was the renowned actor/writer Spalding Gray, whom de Forest had studied theater under in college. You can see Grays influence anytime Carmaig takes the stage. He clearly loves live performance, and the feeling is infectious for those in the audience. Whatever darkness abounds in Carmaig de Forests lyrics, they are always delivered with the joy of being alive and being lucky enough to be somewhere on earth enjoying the privilege of music.

Please do yourself a favor and enjoy the privilege of seeing Carmaig de Forest play live and fully present as Spalding Gray would have it, and with a fantastic band as God and Alex Chilton intended.
