Overview:

Historical trauma combined with stereotypical images of an fisherman, hunter, hiker, birder, or environmentalist abound creates unwelcoming places for many people. Even the words we use suggest exclusivity such as outdoorsman and climber.

While there are many reasons why communities of color fails to connect to the outdoors, there are far too many physical, structural, and environmental barriers that make natural areas accessible to those with various mental, physical, and emotional dis/abilities.

This session focuses on how we can structure, adapt, modify, and contribute things to the environment to enhance participation and performance in children with both visible and invisible dis/abilities. Through discussion, activities, the facilitators will support us as we learn and innovate in ways that strengthen our newest and oldest strategies in providing children access to the multiple dimensions of natural areas.

Join us as we imagine a future where the "outdoors is for everyone" truly arrives.

Why I Should Attend:

While the beneficial outcomes of the outdoors and natural areas are well documented, there remains a need to understand how barriers to youth with dis/abilities impact their access, participation and future engagement in natural areas.

This workshop is a call to action for us and our allies to strengthen our strategies by considering the multitude of ways that people connect with nature.

From watering plants to loose materials of seashells around your environment, there are therapeutic nature experiences we can provide to all that supports not only our children's connection with nature, but ours as well.
