Overview:

All children have the right to learn and play outside. When children have meaningful experiences outdoors, their quality of life, health, and social well being improves. Time outside reduces stress and encourages the development of resilient, creative, and healthy children. Children deserve the benefits that the outdoors provides, yet not all children have the same access to outdoor learning.

While there are many financial and logistical barriers to the outdoors, Early childhood educators and early learning professionals have an opportunity and shared responsibility to provide rewarding outdoor experiences for children.

With an intentional focus on action and accountability, educators, researchers, policy-makers, and administrators will leave with an arsenal of tools and knowledge to support BIPOC families including:

1. A better understanding of some cultural barriers to outdoor learning and ways to address them
2. A new perspective on how to build trust through community outreach
3. Ways to diversify the outdoor workforce and;
4. Strategies to strengthen our communities' connection with nature.

Using the Outdoor Preschool Equity Toolkit, as our framework, this interactive workshop will support programs, policy-makers, and community members in helping children and families heal and connect with nature in culturally responsive ways.

Why I Should Attend:

The spacious outdoor area is a perfect space to meet the learning domains and requirements for many learning models (Head Start, Reggio, Montessori etc). Children can scribble shapes in the sand with examples of the alphabet written next to them. Children have the opportunity to support each other as they navigate tricycles on uneven and bumpy terrain. Most people see pavement, flowers, and trees, but for trained eye, there are multiple learning opportunities and an array of chances for child-led exploration outside.

This workshop is designed to help communities achieve their vision of an environment where all people feel a deep connection with the outdoors, resulting in better health, stronger communities, and flourishing natural places. Guided by equity, collaboration, learning, stewardship, and listening, this workshop is intended for educators, caregivers, community members, politicians, policy-makers, leadership teams and more who are looking to bridge the gap between nature and well-being with resources, tools, and technical support.

About the Presenter

Lynny Brown (she/her) works to improve health by connecting people to the outdoors. Taking a strength-based and relationship-based approach to partnerships, Lynny works on projects that lie at the intersection of health and the environment. Over the past year, Lynny has worked with the Oregon Health & Outdoors Initiative on the Outdoor Preschool project, advancing a vision where every child in every state has the choice to attend an outdoor preschool, to benefit from the physical and mental health improvements that nature provides, and to have equitable access to these resources.

Prior to joining Willamette Partnership, she worked collaboratively with families as an Early Head Start Home Visitor and connected students to nature and the outdoors as an environmental educator.  Outside of work, she is actively a part of the climbing community and regularly volunteers with the Mazamas and other climbing organizations. Please reach out! She loves meeting new people and building connections.
