CONTENT:

Innovative and trauma-informed, a skills-based, neurobiologically grounded lens views challenging behavior as a result of delay or disruption of development of autonomic nervous system functioning as well as crucial cognitive (thinking) skills necessary to handle the demands of everyday life. Experiences of trauma are highly likely to cause impacts in both of these areas.

Unlike traditional approaches to FBAs/BSPs that focus on identifying what a child may be trying to get or avoid, This approach digs deeper, assessing impact on the nervous system, as well as on underlying neurocognitive skills needed for behaving in adaptive ways when triggers or expectations are encountered in the environment that the child is unable to handle. A growing body of research supports the fact that, it is by working to repattern the nervous system to establish a new baseline or set point, along with building these lagging neurocognitive skills that we can develop more adaptive behavior in children who struggle to self-regulate and handle the everyday demands of life as a result of trauma (or other neurological impacts).

Supporting this view, the pediatric neuroscience research of Dr. Bruce Perry of the Child Trauma Academy, the HeartMath Institute and others demonstrate that attempts to change behavior exclusively through cognitive approaches such as behavioral therapies, social skills lessons, anger management lessons, replacement behaviors, etc. fail to honor the brain's need to first Regulate, then Relate, and then Reason.  Approaches that aim straight for the prefrontal cortex fail to understand how trauma may have impacted the stress response system; as a result, adults use too large a dose of intervention (long sessions/lessons that don't provide adequate dosing and spacing), and attempt to ignore the influence that the lower parts of the brain and the mid-brain (fight, flight or freeze response centers) have on a child's behavior.

Through a more empathetic and accurate understanding of what is getting in a child's way, and the application of not only what pediatric neuroscience tells us, but what the latest in resilience and physiological coherence  research is telling us about what a nervous system and brain needs in order to re-pattern the stress response system and build new neural pathways for skills, we are better able to intervene with FBA's/BSP's to support children who have experienced trauma through a collaborative process of teaching skills and solving problems in ways that their brain can accept. And when adults know better, we can do better. We CAN do better for kids with trauma and challenging behavior!!

What will I learn?
-- Strategies for looking deeper, beyond what a child is trying to get or avoid, to assess the underlying skills that need to be built
-- Comparisons of how brain-based, skill-focused FBAs & BSPs more effectively address the needs of children who have experienced trauma than traditional models
-- Processes to assess and plan proactive regulation as part of a plan to help a child become more accessible for intervention
-- Strategies for intervention components of the FBA and BSP to ensure that the brain can tolerate and grow from the experience
-- Application of how to take the information learned and create successful and effective Behavior Support Plans capable of building durable, long-term resilience

This workshop-style training is intended for educators, parents, mental health clinicians, and community partners.

Participants will experience a combination of didactic instruction, visuals, and examples, followed by hands-on creation of an FBA and BSP for a child that you live or work with.

This is an opportunity to not only learn about this model, but to network with others who desire to promote a compassionate and neuro-developmentally supportive approach.
