"Black August is a time for us to reflect on the perpetual struggle against racism and white supremacy in this country. Likewise, it is an opportunity to recommit ourselves to the struggle (or join it, for that matter)."
We deserve clean communities. Living in a neglected environment affects our spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical health. Because there are systems in place to keep us living in degraded, neglected, underserved neighborhoods, gathering as a tribe to clean up in our community is an act of resistance. And thats what we are doing for our Black August Day of Community Service.
We will be meeting in Anacostia Park, out front the Rec center at 11:30 am. We will distribute juices, waters, and clean-up supplies, and share a word about the significance of Black August for our tribe.
We will break into smaller teams and spread out through a few different locations throughout the community. Trash grabbers, receptacles, gloves, and back-up masks will be distributed. Please bring a small backpack or drawstring joint; we will also be distributing juices and waters. We will have a rest-pavilion set up in the park for rest breaks with water, shade, sound healing, and Black resistance literature. Because Black folks resting is revolutionary as well.
We are suggesting a $5 donation to sustain ongoing investments into our community, as well as to cover the costs of supplies and costs of this gathering.
We will re-convene in the park at 4:30 pm to share a meal, garden-style, in the park. We will bring blankets, but please bring your own (you can leave them . at the rest pavilion while you are engaged in the service event). We have Vegan meal options will be available, as we have a vendor popping up with us. Bring lunch money or a bagged lunch.
If you show up late, text sister Niciah to figure out where your team is, and to get your hydration items.
