2020 Blue Gold All Star Basketball Games
For over 20 years, the Blue Gold All Star Basketball games have featured high school seniors who represent the Top 30 boys and Top 30 girls in the state of Delaware by the Delaware Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association. On game day, the top 15 girls from northern Delaware will face the Top 15 girls from southern Delaware in the early afternoon, followed by the Top 15 boys from the north and south in a playoff to determine the best of the best. The games are the final event after a week of activities including spending a day in Dover learning about our judicial and legislative systems and banquet to celebrate with their parents and coaches. The games give our community the opportunity to recognize the achievements of these star athletes at the end of the high school basketball careers.
The Blue Gold Games were created by Mort Kimmel and the legacy is now carried on by his son, Larry. Kimmel, Carter, Roman, Peltz and O'Neill is the premier sponsor of the games and helps to take the event even further by designating a local nonprofit as the beneficiary of all proceeds. In 2020, the beneficiary is Cancer Care Connection (http://www.cancercareconnection.org). Mr. Kimmel served as a board member at Cancer Care Connection for over 15 years and was integral to the organization's success.
Cancer Care Connection in a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization incorporated in Delaware in 2000. Born out of her own journey as a caregiver, The Honorable Roxana Cannon Arsht formed the organization working with members of the community who had personal or professional experience navigating a cancer diagnosis. Judge Arshts goal was to ensure that anyone faced with cancer have access to whatever help they need, regardless of socio- economic status. To that end, our mission is to help people affected by cancer to navigate the full range of issues they face, make informed decisions, and take action on their own behalf. Our vision is that every person affected by cancer has what they need to obtain their best possible outcome.
Hearing the words, you have cancer, marks the beginning of a long journey that can profoundly affect a person's physical health, mental and emotional well-being, as well as, his or her relationships. Patients and caregivers struggle as they try to cope with the changes in their lives and face a world that is now more frightening and uncertain. They find themselves having to make numerous critical decisions despite being in a fragile emotional state of mind. Cancer Care Connections staff of Licensed Clinical Social Workers have over 40 years of collective experience helping patients and caregivers to cope with these fears and move forward in their cancer journey. They provide customized information and personalized referrals, teach tools for handling the emotional upheavals that arise and coaching on how to access the services they need. Cancer Care Connection's service is available to anyone affected by cancer, whether they are a patient, caregiver, family member, or other member of the patients caring circle. They also offer face-to-face counseling to patients and caregivers at cancer center partner locations and tele-counseling on a sliding scale basis.
