GO BETTY GO

Go Betty Go emphatically have established themselves as one of punk rocks most exciting forces. A gloriously rough and tumble sound with melodic aggression. They bring a rich and engaging energy, loaded with lush atmosphere and, at times, an underlying sense of the foreboding.

Formed in 2000 when they were all attending high school in Glendale California, Go Betty Go driven by Betty Cisneros big, roaring guitar, singer Nicolette Vilars soulful, siren call and the momentous urgency of Michelle Rangels bass and Aixa Vilars tumultuous drumming.  The Latina Punk Quartet swiftly ascended from local shows to a standing room only weeknight residency at Los Angeles dive Mr. T Bowls to a national reputation via reams of critical acclaim and non-stop gigging. Go Betty Go surged through two lengthy Warped tours, frequent cross-country tours, an attention getting invasion of South by Southwest and seemingly had it made. With the release of 2005s Nothing is More, their first full length album on Side One Dummy Records, they set out to tour yet again. They never finished itNicolette, exhausted, unhappy and burned out, suddenly quit. She walked away and the bands remaining members found themselves at a crossroad.

The remaining members drafted singer Emily Wynne-Hughes and bassist Phil Buckman and continued gigging but the creative momentum eventually was gone, and at one point they quit performing for over two years. Miraculously, after a friend suggested a one off 2012 gig all four original members found themselves reunited on stage. As if the band had a life of its own, Go Betty Go was back as suddenly as they had split.

That renewal and excitement crackles through their last release Reboot, like a high voltage jolt of electricity, and Go Betty go are poised to reclaim their rightful prominence as some of the brightest, boldest women in punk rock.

JOHNNY MADCAP & THE DISTRACTIONS

https://johnnymadcapandthedistractions.bandcamp.com

L.A. singer, songwriter Johnny Madcap, formerly of the punk rock band Madcap, (Side one Dummy, Victory Records), has formed a new rock and roll outfit called Johnny Madcap and The Distractions. The Distractions, a group of low slung, guitar slinger types are the perfect compliment to Johnnys raw pop sensablities. Together, Johnny and the band are simply obsessed with one thing, - turning their shows into full-blown parties. Dancing, singing, shouting and carrying on like the world may end tomorrow.

Over the past year, Johnny Madcap and the Distractions have been hard at work recording and releasing records, filming videos and performing with such notable bands as The Bouncing Souls, The Dead Milkmen, Flogging Molly, CadillacTramps, Youth Brigade, Missing Persons and Eddie and The Hotrods. With 2 records released in 2011, EP  Lets Get Lost & LP Last Man Dancing available on Itunes, the band shows no signs of slowing down. Goodbye Michelle, On the Radio and, American Gossip are just some of the many songs that will have you almost instantly singing along and moving to the beat.

One listen and you wont be able to help but feel as if youve known this band your whole life. On stage and on record, Johnny Madcap and The Distractions conjure up sounds and images reminiscent of the days when pop music straddled New Wave, Punk and Pub Rock. With a dash of Tom Petty, a slice of Elvis Costello, a pinch of The Plimsouls and a handful of L.A. street wise rock and roll, this band will take your heart and soul to musically sublime places you have always wanted them to be.

BACKSTAGE PASS

https://semi-prorecords.bandcamp.com/album/backstage-pass-77

Semi-Pro Records is proud to announce the first-ever collection from California punk pioneers Backstage Pass. Available October 12th, in conjunction with Cassette Store Day 2019, the release features nine live and studio tracks. Limited to 125 copies worldwide, each tape will include digital downloads and Backstage Pass collectibles.

Backstage Pass was a mostly-female American punk-pop band from Los Angeles. The band was formed in 1976, and is known as one of the citys earliest punk bands. They are also recognized for helping to build and launch Hollywoods most iconic punk venue, The Masque.

Marina Del Rey (Marina Muhlfriedel) started the band on a whim with bassist Joanna Spock Dean. Before they ever played a note, Backstage Pass was announced in Britains Melody Maker and Sounds music newspapers, and in Rodney Bingenheimers Phonograph Record Magazine column. Genny Body (Genny Schorr), Ché Zuro, and Barrakuda Majors (Holly Beth Vincent) were other key members of the group. There were several incarnations of the band, all comprised of female musicians, except for an assortment of male drummers. Drummer Rod The Perve Mitchell played with Backstage Pass longer than any other drummer. Mike Ruiz from Milk n Cookies also performed in various lineups.

The band spent its first months rehearsing at Cherokee Studios in a room with a one-way mirror, through which Alice Cooper, David Bowie and others would watch them try to figure out their instruments. Their relationship to Stiff Records founder Jake Riviera, Elvis Costello, and British punk band The Damned coaxed them out of the rehearsal room and onto the stage. They played extensively in Southern and Northern California on bills with Devo, The Mumps, Wall of Voodoo, The Nuns, Elvis Costello (opening his first US tour!), The Screamers, The Weirdos and others. Backstage Pass was often featured in seminal punk publications including Backdoor Man, Slash Magazine, Flipside and others, photographed by notable rock photographers including Jenny Lens, Brad Elterman, Donna Santisi and James Stark.

The bands song Legend (Come on Up to Me) appears on the Rhino Records punk anthology Saturday Night Pogo, and was covered by Redd Kross in the cult movie Desperate Teenage Lovedolls with Spock singing lead.

Backstage Pass dissolved in 1979. Marina Del Rey formed Vivabeat, which was signed by Peter Gabriel to Charisma Records. Holly Vincent created Holly and The Italians and had a hit record with Tell That Girl to Shut Up. Ché Zuro became part of The Orchids which was formed by Kim Fowley. Genny Schorr had been a contender to join the Runaways before joining Backstage Pass and later turned down a role in The Go-Gos. She instead went on to be in the original lineup of cow-punk band The Screamin Sirens with Pleasant Gehman. Spock later played with a number of local bands, as bass player and percussionist. Marina, Genny, and Spock continue to be interviewed about the early punk era in Los Angeles.
Semi-Pro Records is an East Nashville independent label, focusing on short-run analog releases and handmade collectibles.
