Inspired by traditional calligraphy techniques, well explore ways to improve markmaking with square-tipped or chisel-tipped pens. These versatile tools have rectangular nibs that can create a dynamic range of line widths and effects. We will start with the basics and learn the preferred way to hold the pen so that lines have a consistency that creates a rhythmic drawing. Considering atmospheric perspective concepts, we can decide how to distribute a range of line weights around the picture. Students should feel pushed out of their comfort zone to avoid relying on the fine-lined side of the pen and embrace the range of marks the tool can give you to efficiently capture architectural and atmospheric elements.
Eleanor will lead students in a few basic calligraphy and drawing exercises that will teach aesthetics and balance in line. Then she will demo a drawing applying those techniques. The students will then complete one or two urban sketches under instructor supervision. Well end with a constructive critique of all the sketches and learn from each others successes and attempts.
Learning goals:
* Become mindful of ways to hold the pen to create rhythm. * Show dimension through different line weights. * Simplify objects using the wide side of the nib to our advantage.
Supply list:
Required:
* At least 1 chisel-tipped or square-tipped calligraphy pen (see recommendations below). The nib should be wider than 1.5mm. For more fun, bring more pens with different ink colors. * Graphite pencil for rough sketching * 2 - 3 sheets of paper (120 gsm recommended), hot press or with minimal texture, about 9x12 * Notebook, sketchbook or scrap paper for exercises
Pen recommendations: * Pilot Parallel pen (highly recommended). Any of the 4 size options would be good. Available locally at most art supply stores (though you should call first to see if theyre in stock) or online, and the cartridges are reusable with some determination (or with a syringe). Note that the ink that comes with the pen is water-soluble, but the ink can be changed. I will show you how to hack the larger-size nibs in the workshop, so it might be fun to bring the blue (6mm) or green (3.8mm) Parallel pens if you want to do it, too. * Kuretake Zig Memory System calligraphy markers - set of 8 or 4 (recommended). The set of 8 has better colors. Economical, these pens are great and last forever, the tips stay sharp and crisp, and the ink is waterproof. (Unfortunately, they are not available locally.) A similar non-waterproof set is also available. * Itoya double-sided calligraphy markers, which make a nice line. Ink is not waterproof. Optional: Watercolor or ink wash for adding tone
