Why hide a glorious piece of music in the bottom of a desk drawer for 40 years? What compels a composer to hide in a basement to write music during the destruction of his beloved city only to premiere it in a cloakroom?

NYCHORAL presents The Hidden Mass, a concert of choral works of two 20th century composers - Frank Martin and Zoltán Kodály - who each created masterful compositions under extraordinary circumstances. Organist Paolo Bordignon joins the New York Choral Society for this concert.

Martin's Mass for Double Chorus, which the composer did not allow to be performed for over 40 years after its composition, is now recognized as one of the great masterpieces of 20th century a cappella choral music.  Kodály's Missa Brevis, for chorus and organ, was written in early 1945 in Budapest, as the Soviet Army swept the Nazi occupiers from Hungary.

In the pre-concert discussion at 7 PM (open to all ticket holders), music director David Hayes and organist Paolo Bordignon will explore the creative processes of Martin and Kodály, and discuss St. Bart's Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ, the largest in New York.

Online sales end March 6 at 8 AM. Tickets will also be available at the concert; St. Bartholomew's box office opens at 6:45 PM and doors open at 7:00 PM.
