SADC Winter Salon 2020
An evening of seven choreographers presenting new and innovative work. This winter's artists explore topics such as the shape-shifting of motherhood, gender expression expectations in Middle Eastern communities, and traditional drag queens.

Featuring work by
A. Spearman & Co.
Kel Dae
Vera Hannush
Lucy Dillon
Stephanie Unger & Artists
Jennifer Minore

A. Spearman & Co. presents an excerpt of "Terra Femme", that centers on embodying Earth as a feminine being whose energy (resources-water, land, plants and vegetation, minerals, etc) is being drained by her children who create man made devices and disasters. A. Spearman & Co. is a contemporary fusion dance company that was founded in 2012 by Artistic Director Andréa Spearman, where all artists are trained in various fields of movement including ballet, jazz, hip hop, modern, and cultural dance. This company seeks to design and create unique vocabularies of performance.

Kel Dae is a drag performer and dance maker.  Through navigating gender, seasoning her drag, finding forgotten queer history, and questioning science, Kel seeks to find context for what being a "Traditional Queen" is all about in an excerpt of their work in progress "Traditional Queen: A Performative Lecture".

Vera Hunnush presents "SWANA King" a performance piece that explores the (resolvable?) tensions between gender expression expectations in SWANA/Middle Eastern culture through dance, drag, dance as drag (!), Arabic Gotye covers, a cousin's song about grape leaves, and flying keffiyehs!

Lucy Dillon choreographed her piece, "The Crisis Club," with the dancers of The Collective SF. The Collective SF is a dance project created by young artists in response to the complications of living in the Bay Area, and inspired by the power of collaboration.

Stephanie Unger & Artists, presents Bounce Back, a collaborative work by Stephanie Unger and Tamsin Nutter. The piece began its journey two years ago as the two artists realized that they shared the shape-shifting experience of motherhood.

Jennifer Minore has been performing in the Bay Area since 1993.  She has performed with the Funsch Dance Experience, Right Brain Performance Lab, and is currently performing with Stephanie Unger & Artists as well as Ruth Botchan. She is on the Board of the Oakland Ballet Company and works for a non-profit that provides telecommunication devices for people with disabilities. In her spare time she tries to reuse/repurpose everything. What spare time?
