Access to Ustads Project & Seattle Tabla Institute present ~ History of the Divine Raga [POSTPONED] with renowned professor of history & philosphy Wes Cecil, world vocalist Srivani Jade & tabla drumming master Ravi Albright, with Vivek Datar on harmonium. In this special Access to Ustads Project Concert & Lecture, we will discover the spiritual & religious origins of the Raga (melody) & tala (rhythm) system of South Asia through an interactive discussion & demonstration. We invite you to discover and delve into the world of Indian Classical Music with us on Saturday, March 7th at Eastside Bahai Center!
Srivani Jade
Srivani Jade was introduced to music at the age of four by her father Bhavani Prasad Jade and uncle Raghavendra Tilwalli. Srivani has five solo albums to her credit, and several grants, artist residencies and awards, including the Washington State Arts Commission Fellowship Award (2009) and an NEA grant for her musical composition work on the existential love poetry of Meera Bai (Astitva, 2011).
She has composed and recorded theme vocals for independent films such as Tapasya (2003), Siddhanto (2014) and stage productions such as Indian Ink (Sound Theater Company). She is an auditioned artist with All India Radio, and Visiting Artist with the University of Washington School of Music's Ethnomusicology program. She has also presented workshops on Hindustani/Bhakti music at UW Bothell, University of Puget Sound, University of British Columbia (Canada) etc.
Srivani's inter-disciplinary work, with visual artist Annette Solyst's miniature 'Peacock' paintings was featured as a month-long installation at Jack Straw New Media Gallery (Raag-rang) in 2014. Her work as a soloist for Seattle-based B'shnorkestra's Global Concerto series (Tagore's Prarthona) was featured in the 2016 Earshot Jazz Festival, and received critical acclaim.

Prof. Wes Cecil
"I am a student of language and literature. I have been reading, writing, and studying for most of my life. I received a B.A. in English from Fresno State and then went on to receive an M.A. and Ph.D. in English at Indiana University. I am interested in literature, philosophy, history and gardening. For the last 16 years, I have been a teacher at Peninsula College and, when not working, reading, or writing, spend much of my time in my garden."

Ravi Albright
Ravi Joseph Albright is a professional tabla player, percussionist and the Executive Director of Seattle Tabla Institute, a 501c3 non-profit organization, that offers ongoing classes, workshops and musical events throughout the year in Seattle, WA. Ravi also formerly served as Adjunct Professorship of Tabla at Lewis & Clark college in Portland, OR.
Ravi has studied accompaniment from and performed with many accomplished Indian musicians such as sarodist Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, sitarist Ut. Shahid Parvez Khan, sarodist Pt. Tejendra Majumdar, bansuri flute maestros G.S. Sachdev, Deepak Ram, and many others. Ravi has performed & presented in the Seattle area, at UW Seattle Ethnomusicology, UW Bothell, Cornish College of the Arts, Seattle University, and throughout the United States and Canada.

Vivek Datar
An accomplished harmonium player, Vivek has performed many times around the country, repeatedly for Seattle Tabla Institute events and accompanied some of India's greatest music masters. Based in the Bay area in California, Vivek brings his knowledge of the Indian reed organ to the Seattle area once again for History of the Divine Raga.
