Intensive Review Workshop Description:

Building Equity Literacy in Our Ourselves

Equity literacy refers to the knowledge and skills that enable us to recognize and redress conditions that deny some people access to opportunities based on identity (gender, race, class and sexual orientation.) Equity literate service providers, staff, leadership, organizers or anyone interested in serving others in more impactful ways, will be able to identify and respond to the subtle and not-so-subtle biases we encounter daily. Through the sharing of our own stories and a deeper reflection on generationally passed bias, participants will focus on building language and understanding around power and privilege, internalized oppression, allied behavior and learn to practice strong dialog principles to better serve our beloved communities in highly respectful and empathetic ways.

Intersectional Allied Behavior: What if Im white or straight or cisgender or middle class?

From the abolitionist, to the male feminist, to the parent of a trans child, we have been activating allied behavior from our agent identities throughout history. Witness, Accomplice, Agent of Change, Conspirator, Allyregardless of the changing terminology, this workshop will dive deeply into what conscious allied behavior looks like and how to build skills to be more effective in our solidarity work with people of color, the LGBTQ community, people experiencing poverty and any group being marginalized today. We will examine our fragility, identify our challenge areas and work with current case studies to unearth implicit bias. We will practice disrupting behaviors that perpetuate racism, sexism, trans and Islamophobia, and through self-reflection, storytelling and group dialog, focus on and commit to the most current and effective practices in conscious allied living.

In Reach and Out Reach: Advocating for Equity and Inclusion Work in our Communities

Do you ever feel like youre preaching to the choir? Are you growing your movement for change? Who is at the table for dialog and do they represent the wider community? This workshop uses the principles of dialog and case studies to learn the art of messaging, advocacy and partnership. Topics include: Learning to talk about equity work with accessible and current language, supporting decision makers and local leaders to make inclusion a priority, understanding nuances and dynamics of engaging with other community organizations, centering a shared vision of solidarity, awareness of privilege and equitable leadership

Navigating Dissent and Establishing Sustainability

Opposition to conversations, programs and systems that prioritize equity and inclusion are alive, well and currently growing. One our biggest challenges today is staying at the table to share our experiences, hopes and fears. We live in a polarized time where media allows us to stay isolated from different opinions. This disconnection decreases our ability to create community and establish sustainable systems of equity in our schools and other important spaces. This workshop will face the difficulties of negotiating dissenting voices fearful of progress. We will practice techniques successfully used by movements throughout history such as physiological awareness, inquiry models, heart and head philosophies and deconstructive listening. Through storytelling, role play and activities from Theater of the Oppressed we will practice our messaging and advocacy skills to support those in resistance, and to strengthen our abilities to sustain and grow our movements.
