STATES OF MIND
STATES OF MIND is an evening of Contemporary Dance and Live Music. It is a collaboration between Donna Eshelman, Artistic Director and Choreographer, and Pedro Manuel Toro, Music Director and classical pianist.
STATES OF MIND presents the distinguishing moments in the stories of several female characters from literature, legend, myth, and history which also inspired the composition of the largely classical musical selections. These selections include Schumann and Schubert pieces about Mignon and Gretchen based on these characters in work by the greatest German literary figure of the modern era, J.W. von Goethe, the 20 minute Reinecke sonata for flute and piano which shares the mythical story of the water spirit Undine, and the Poulenc Improvisation no. 15 "Hommage a Edith Piaf." Performers trained in opera, ballet, contemporary dance, and acting perform to create the layers in which we can view these stories.
Donna Eshelman is a choreographer whose recent credits for theatre include Coeurage Theatre's The Woodsman, Vieux Carré, and Slaughter City, Greenway Court Theatre's Blackbird (Ovation Recommended), Artists at Plays world premiere of Carla Chings The Two Kids That Blow Shit Up (Ovation Recommended), and The Brief But Spectacular Life of Boonsom Phalat, written/directed by Henry Ong, She's Not There written/directed by Ali Maclean (Best Production, SheLA Arts Festival), and Schumann's Mignon for a piano recital by Pedro Manuel Toro.
