LAST ACTION HERO with Andy Iwancio & Derek Sheen
LAST ACTION HERO may be the *most* meta movie of all-time. Written by two college buddies Zak Penn & Adam Leff as a parody of the action genre, it was meant to send-up ubiquitous blockbuster movies like Lethal Weapon, or Die Hard, but THEN the two writers were kicked off of the project and it was given to the very writers, actors, and directors it was meant to mock. That is like your boss forcing you to throw a surprise party for their birthday.
The ad campaign alone, which included a promo on the side of a rocket being shot into space, is a master-class in hubris. It was one of the biggest flops in history, because despite seemingly being a huge budget action movie, at it's core is a weird brain and heart full of sensitive pathos.
The plot is the easiest part to sum up: kid has magic ticket that makes him fall into the world of action movies, meets hero of action movie, desperately tries to get back to real-world by revealing to him that he is actually in a movie. Villains and explosions ensue. To keep from ruining it, that's all i need to say.
Featuring two stand-up comedy sets prior to the screening from Derek Sheen and Andy Iwancio!
DEREK SHEEN: Derek Sheen is a cuddly mess of rage and insecurity. Comedy fans whove been lucky enough to catch him performing with Patton Oswalt, Janeane Garofalo or Rory Scovel have witnessed what Brian Posehn calls A goddamned delight. So smart and funny it makes me mad. Derek Sheen has also released three critically acclaimed albums (Holy Drivel, Tiny Idiot and Disasterbation) available on Minneapolis label Stand Up! Records and his fourth, Macho Caballero, should drop sometime in late 2019.
ANDY IWANCIO: Andy is a transgender gal comedian from Seattle who waxes poetics on being transgender, growing boobs, and then, subsequently, shaking those boobs because of her epilepsy. So, all of that, plus puns. She has opened for Whitmer Thomas, James Adomian, and Cameron Epsosito. Festival-wise, she has done Bumbershoot, Out of Bounds, Altercation, Women in Comedy NW, Ha-Ha Harvest Festival, Intersections, and All-Jane. She also appeared in the HUMP! film-festival award-winning film "Queer Safari" and the Emmy award-winning movie "Star Wars Uncut".
"She is a real cool lady" --Horatio Sanz (SNL)
"She's really funny. Her last name has a lot of vowels too." --Laurie Kilmartin (CONAN)
