Twelve Days of Christmas in Wales
The Welsh Society of Oregon (WSOR) celebrates Christmas in song and story, bringing together Welsh vocal and instrumental music along with readings and dramatic enactments.  The concert program highlights the distinctive traditions of Wales throughout the holiday season from the melodious decking of the hall and rustic, plygain carols by candlelight, to the wintry Mari Lwyd wassailers and final festivities of Twelfth Night. The program will also include sing-alongs and even a chance to learn to sing a little in the language of heavenWelsh!

The musical program features the WSOR's Welsh Dragon Choir (directed by Dr. Jamie Webster) singing carols and other seasonal music old and new in Welsh and English.  Joining them will be special guests Andrea Wild and the Bad Wolves, Portland's only Welsh folk music band, an ensemble of pipes, fiddle, and other traditional instruments, and led by folk vocalist Andrea Wild.  The dramatic program features readings of Dylan Thomas by our own Idris Evans, a native of mid-Wales, as well as enactments by the Little Dragons, our childrens improvisational troupe.

The Welsh Society Choir draws on the rich traditions of choral singing in Wales, long known as the land of song.  In addition to the very successful annual Christmas Concert, the choir also holds a Noson Lawen, a night of fun and singing, every June.  They also occasionally sing at the Gymanfa Ganu (Welsh hymn singing festival) at Bryn Seion Welsh Church, and at other events during the year such as the Samhain Celtic New Year Festival in Salem.  Dr. Jamie Lynn Webster also directs Portland's ViVoce Womens Chorus.

Andrea Wild and The Bad Wolves are on a mission to bring traditional Welsh folk music to a broader audience. In the forefront of the band is Andrea Wild. Having grown up with a Welsh speaking mother and grandparents, this music project is born of true passion and authenticity. The Bad Wolves are uilleann piper and fiddler, Preston Howard, and multi-instrumentalist, Zac Leger. With strong vocals, bouzouki, guitar, fiddle, whistles, accordion and pipes this ensemble collectively generates unique and lively arrangements of Welsh folk music infused with dynamic elements from the Breton and Cornish and Scottish music traditions. In addition to their Welsh material, the band also has an extensive Irish repertoire including songs, jigs and raging reels. This energized pan-Celtic band will leave you wanting more.

The Welsh Society of Oregon celebrates and perpetuates Welsh heritage, culture and music in Oregon and the Northwest.  The WSOR is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and is a member of the Oregon Cultural Trust.
