Dekoboko Taiko First Concert: Hibana
Join Dekoboko Taiko in their first standalone concert at the Theatre Off Jackson in the International District, Seattle. The concert will be a culmination of the group's efforts in developing Japanese drumming skills, creating original pieces, exploring self expression, and enjoying the spark of friendship through taiko.

The concert is named after the first original song written for the group by Lamond Le and Maggie Thorpe. Hibana means "spark" in Japanese. We thought this best portrayed the spark our members feel for each other while playing taiko together. The concert follows the development of a friendship - to one another and to the drums itself.

Founded in Fall 2017, Dekoboko Taiko is an independent group of drummers who first met at Taiko Kai at the University of Washington. Dekoboko ("deh-koh-boh-koh") literally translates to "bumpy, rough" and is frequently seen on street signs in Japan warning of bumpy roads. The founding members knew that starting a new taiko group consisting of young professionals and fresh university graduates would most likely be a "bumpy road", but that the journey would be worth it.

Taiko, or Japanese drumming, is learned through memorization of its sounds. Each sound has a different word and "dekoboko" sounds like hitting three different drums down a line. As an ensemble, Dekoboko Taiko hopes to create a layered sound with stories.
