Asian Glow V
Asian Glow is a performance series for the Asian diaspora in Boston, particularly creatives in a genre or style that does not necessarily link to their ancestral identity. Asian artists often face tokenism and pressure to reference their cultural ancestry, while also being treated as monolith under the terms Asian American and model minority. Asian Glow encourages artists to be seen as individuals and perform as the majority, without explanation or apology (reference to Viet Thanh Nguyen).

This upcoming Asian Glow on November 16 will take place at the Pao Arts Center at 6:30pm. Performing artists include R&B, singer/songwriter Ava Sophia; Multi-media, spoken word artist Hassan Ghanny; and acoustic punk, spoken word artist The Michael Character.

The Michael Character is a musical project fronted by James Ikeda, an artist and educator based in Quincy, MA. He makes punk music and poetry as TMC and gives musical history lectures with his other project MCtheProfessor.GOV, an improvisational chamber orchestra. In addition to music, poetry, teaching, and academic pursuits in the field of history, James is an avid 8-ball pool player and loves spam musubi.

HASSAN GHANNY is a writer, performer, and multidisciplinary artist based in Jamaica Plain. His work explores the intersections of media, culture, and identity, with an intention to uplift people of color and people in diasporas. He is a regular writer for Boston Hassle and is the author of the essay collection SCORCHED RICE: Manifestos on Caribbean Diaspora Liberation. As a performer, he is the winner of the 2018 Asé Slam and has been the feature performer at venues across Boston including the Feel It Speak It Mic, Subcontinental Drift, and Dorchester Art Project.

Ava Sophia is a graduate of the world-renowned Berklee College of Music and she is continuing to share her music locally in and around Boston. She recently released a short EP entitled "To See and Hear Herself" in October of 2019 dedicated to empowering women, people of color, and marginalized communities to feeling and expressing our emotions to the fullest extent. Her true passion and ambition are captured when she describes music to be the only way I know how to make the world a better place.''
