Retro Local Screening
KEET will premiere two documentaries and host a panel discussion to dig into the issues raised. The panel will include experts and stakeholders from the film, and others. Members of the public are invited free of charge to view and discuss the films, and enjoy some refreshments.
KEET takes on two long-standing local issues as part of its collaboration with new PBS program, Retro Report. KEET received grant money to make two short films that connected current events with relevant historic precedents as part of the Retro Local Initiative.
KEETs team pitched and produced two short documentaries:
On Sanctuary: Immigration and Removal in Humboldt County, which examines how Humboldt County's treatment of immigrants has evolved from Chinese removal in the late 1880s and early 1900s to the recent passage of a sanctuary initiative.
The Return of Indian Island, which looks at the city of Eureka's recent decision to return the bulk of Indian Island to the Wiyot Tribe. The island was the site of a massacre in 1860, during the Wiyots World Renewal Ceremony, when many Wiyots were killed at the hands of white settlers.
For both of these documentaries, producer James Faulk and director Sam Greene interviewed historians, activists, and current immigrants to piece the film together, then combed through local archives to find historic images to help illustrate the story.
