Black Nativity

Black Nativity is a celebrated, timeless cultural piece of art that has become a long standing tradition of our Greater New Haven Community. It sets the tone and ushers in the spirit of the holidays. It illustrates the expectations of the birth of a Savior and the strength of our faith in a risen King. The late Poet, Playwright, Novelist and Social Activist, James Mercer Langston Hughes was bold in a time of inequality. He was relentless in his pursuit of patriotism. At the age of 14, Langton Hughes was introduced to the Holy Spirit during an old time revival. His pursuit and thirst for the word of God, enabled his faith and encouraged, not only his intellectual, but also his creative and artistic prowess. Haven written several works and pieces dedicated to his Savior and for the culture of his Black and Brown people. His contributions influenced the Afro-American Cultural identity during the Harlem Renaissance.

This Year we celebrate Langston Hughes for his vision and strength to be authentic. We continue to dedicate our rendition to the memory of the late Minister Vernon Lee Jones. A pioneer of gospel music in the city of New Haven. His brand and style of worship paved the way for many local gospel artist and groups today. Combining the artistic accomplishments these two great men, is truly a wonder and amazing event to behold.

The Bethel AMEC Music Department is once again pleased to showcase its superb Liturgical Dance group, under the amazing choreography and direction of Mrs. Carrissa Kee-Conyers. We are very excited to bring this magnificent rendition of Black Nativity to the Greater New Haven Community. We look forward to sharing this stunning experience with you.
