The Pipes of Christmas - 21st Edition
From the bold sounds of bagpipes and the harmonious blend of brass, strings and percussion, to the poetic and lyrical words that complement them, The Pipes of Christmas has become an annual tradition in New York and New Jersey since its inception in 1999. The Pipes of Christmas celebrates the great history and legacy of Scots and Highland culture in a well-loved, sold-out concert each December holiday season.
Traditional, Long Forgotten and New Works
Iconic sounds of bagpipes, brass, drums and organ, as well as the sounds of harp, fiddle, acoustic guitar and flute are woven together with Scottish, Irish, and Welsh stories told and sung in English, Gaelic, and old Scots.
While much of the program features traditional music, The Pipes of Christmas also showcases compositions old and new never before performed. We actively include long-forgotten Christmas carols and poems.
Clan Currie, or more accurately the MacMhuirich Bardic Family (pronounced MacVurich) has been around since the 13th century. The MacMhuirichs are among the most celebrated poets and bards in Gaeldom and served as Hereditary Bards to the Lords of the Isles and later to the MacDonalds of Clanranald.
The Clan Currie Society continues this legacy today in its celebration of Scots and Highland culture and history, with the production of new works and training of new composers and poets, and support for music artists in our concerts.
Each year, The Pipes of Christmas presents new works to celebrate the Scots continuing contributions to our cultural legacy. This tradition began in 2001 when Pipe Major Blandford composed Lament for the Lost; a haunting piece to commemorate the 9/11 terror attacks.

The Concerts Mandate and Audience
The programs mandate is to inspire, to foster musical talent and showcase brilliant musicians, to present poetry from the British Isles, and to celebrate the coming of Christ during Advent.
One of New York Citys Top Ten holiday events, The Pipes is widely recognized as unique in its programming and having appeal to a diverse audience. Since making its debut in 1999, The Pipes of Christmas has played to standing-room-only audiences. In response to its popularity the first two years, a second concert was added in 2001 to accommodate high-ticket demand.
The Pipes of Christmas has an impressive reach. Since its inaugural year, The Pipes has served more than an estimated 3,200 audience members annually, some returning year-after-year. The Pipes has seen Scottish diplomats, film and television stars, fashion designers and ex-pats alike join this rich cultural experience. Highlights of the concert are also broadcast to more than 400,000 cable subscribers in 11 New Jersey towns on a community access channel via Comcast and Verizon, as well as online streaming worldwide on Christmas Eve and Day.
Concert tickets are priced to ensure accessibility to the public at all income levels. It enjoys a broad audiencefor the Celtic community, it offers a coming together at one of the most wonderful and important times of the year, and provides an opportunity to hear the language of its ancestors. For all, this one-of-a kind concert in the New York metropolitan region is uplifting and celebrates the best of human nature.
We have also released a popular CD of The Best of the Pipes of Christmas. A second volume is now in production.
