Join the Everett Philharmonic Orchestra for a delightful afternoon of Mozart on Sunday, February 9, 2019 from 3-5 PM in the ideal chamber music setting of Everett's First Presbyterian Church.
Our winter concert could be named, The Best of Mozart. It begins with the effervescent and ever-fresh Overture to the Marriage of Figaro, the perfect opening for a comedy about the collisions between love and desire. (Spoiler alert: true love wins out in the end!)
Next, violinist Svend Ronning has a musical conversation with violist John Scanlon in the beautiful Symphonie Concertante for Violin and Viola. While the overall mood of the work is pleasant and satisfied, the soulful, song-full second movement adds emotional depth with a touch of melancholy.
The program concludes with Mozarts final symphony, #41 in C, the Jupiter. The nickname (given by its publisher, not by its composer) exemplifies the works grand, outgoing, festive nature, particularly apparent in the opening movement. In contrast, the slow movement is serene overall though occasionally interrupted by passages of tension. The shifting moods of the Minuet movement leave an enigmatic taste. The finale is more upbeat, and grows out of a four-note theme. The conclusion is a compositional tour-de-force: Mozart takes the five main themes of the movement and plays them all simultaneously, an amazing feat of musical juggling!
