Featuring the versatile vocalist Jaya Vidyasagar Live in concert with an amazing instrumental ensemble featuring Tabla Maestro Ustad Arshad Syed, Guitarist Richard Michos , Violinist Jim Hurley, Flutist Akshay Naresh, Drummer Steve Robertson, Vikas Salvi on the Keys and Harmonium and  Raj Iyer on Handsonic.

They will be performing songs of different genres ranging from Classical -Semi classical - Spiritual - Fusion - Folk- Light - Film Classics. Come witness the magic of music when these musicians come together create some beautiful music and memories.


About the artists

Jaya Vidyasagar
Jaya Vidyasagar is a versatile musician who is trained in both styles of classical - Hindustani & Carnatic. With a formal music education since the age of 5, she trained under renowned Gurus in both styles and. eventually under the legend and her inspiration Smt. Veena Sahasrabudhe.
With a first concert at the age of 8, she has gone to perform at various prestigious venues all over India, some in the presence of a Former President & former Prime Minister of India and noted public figures
Her concerts include songs in different languages, some of which she can speak fluently as well - Hindi, Tamil , Marathi, Telugu ,Bengali, Gujrati, Kannada and Sanskrit.
Academically, with an MBA- Finance background, she found her true calling in music and quit a professional career to pursue music.  She runs Swaralay School of Music in the Bay Area has been imparting the musical art to students of varying age groups ranging from 4 - 65.  
She has collaborated with notable musicians and her independent music records and videos are available on iTunes, Spotify and YouTube.

Ustad Arshad Syed - Tabla
An original member of the Diga Rhythm Band, which included tabla master Zakir Hussain and Grateful Dead percussionist Mickey Hart, Arshad Syed also performs with the Zakir Hussain Rhythm Experience, and as an accompanist with top classical Indian music artists such as Ustad Sultan Khan, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Shujaat Khan, Pt. G.S. Sachdev,Pandit Habib Khan and many leading Ghazal singers from India and Pakistan. He is also known for his skill with light classical and folk rhythms. Arshad Syed studied tabla with Khalifa (Grand Master) Ustad Allah Rakha of the Punjab Gharana lineage of tabla playing.
A very melodic percussionist, in the second half of his musical career he has focused on the Indian santoor, a stringed instrument indigenous to the Kashmir valley. Arshad Syed is a disciple of the great santoor maestro Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma.
Apart from being a percussionist and a Santoor Maestro, Ustad Arshad Syed is also a writer and composer having brought out the writings of several poets into a musical treat for listeners and connoisseurs of original music.
In 2008, Arshad was a master artist in ACTA's Apprenticeship Program. In 2018 he was honored by the Alameda County for Excellence in Human Relations.
Arshad Syed teaches tabla and santoor in Fremont, Cupertino & San Jose, California.


Jim Hurley - Violin
Jim Hurley began his music studies long ago, in Livermore, CA public schools. He later studied violin with Dr. Madeline Schatz, a protege of legendary violinists Jascha Heifetz, Henryk Szeryng and Josef Gingold. Jim also attended master classes at Humboldt State University, where he earned his B.A., Music in violin performance in 1981.
Jim has since performed with Queen Idas Grammy-winning Bon Temps Zydeco Band, Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, chinese classical virtuoso Zhao Hui, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Dan Hicks, Al Stewart, Josh Groban, Smokey Robinson, Kenneth Nash, Stanley Jordan, the Waybacks, Tempest, Ancient Future, and many other artists and ensembles.
Jims has several  live TV appearances and live radio credits.
He has performed at several jazz festivals, folk music festivals, a few stadiums and european castles, in 15 countries.
He performs locally with his original jazz quartet, Night Harvest.
Jim founded Open Strings Music Studio, in Livermore, in 1997. He is Music Director of Music Pathways, a program that brings music education to disadvantaged youth in the Livermore area, under the auspices of the Wente Foundation for Arts Education.

Richard Michos - Guitar
Guitarist and music producer Richard Michos has performed extensively locally and internationally.
He is an established studio guitarist and music mentor in the Bay Area. His solo performances are a rich tapestry of guitar mixed with a masterful use of loops blending international, pop, and jazz styles. Michos plays electric and acoustic guitar, double string styles, sampling and guitar synthesis.
He specializes in fusing traditional melodic forms in with modern grooves and instrumentation. He has recorded albums for artists such as  his wife, vocalist Riffat Sultana,  Ustad Shafqat Ali Khan, and Georges Lammam. His productions have been reviewed with stars in Billboard, highly rated on the CMJ radio charts, and featured in articles of Rhythm magazine and Folk Roots, as well NPR.


Akshay Naresh - Flute
Akshay Naresh has been playing hindustani and carnatic flute for over 15 years. He started training under pandit Yogi Surjit, and then continued his tutelage under Shri Prasad Bhandarkar. Akshay learned carnatic flute from Shri Shashank Subramaniam. Akshay has played in numerous concerts throughout the US and India, and has even played in fusion concerts with Western musicians. Akshay is also a self taught musician who plays the piano, saxophone, Western flute, and Ukelele.
Besides his musical interests, Akshay holds a doctorate in clinical psychology. He has been practicing in various clinical and academic settings, most recently being at Santa Clara university. Akshay is excited to continue his postdoctoral training at Kaiser Permanente.


Vikas Salvi - Keyboard
Vikas Salvi is a self taught musician from the Bay Area who started playing harmonium for fun almost 25 years ago. He has a keen ear for good music and good poetry. He has been performing for more than 20 years and is a sought after artists for many bands and musicians all over the States as well as with many visiting artists from India.

Raj Iyer - Handsonic
Raj Iyer is a highly talented percussionist. Raj started playing Tabla at the age of 7 and learnt to play Dholak and Dhol along the way.  In the last several years he has seamlessly transitioned his virtuosity on the Tabla and other instruments to the Handsonic. He uses the Handsonic to play a variety of instruments to unleash a variety of percussive treats. Raj has performed with various groups in and outside of the Bay area and has accompanied visiting Bollywood singers in the Bay area. He enjoys listening to old Bollywood songs, Ghazals, Hindustani classical music and is an ardent fan of R D Burman.

Steve Robertson - Drums
Steve Robertson is a professional musician, composer, producer, studio musician and educator based in Aptos, California. He has over 30 years experience performing and teaching in the public school system and privately. He is currently the musical director at the Seascape Resort where he performs every Friday and Saturday with various ensembles in a number of different styles.  A graduate in orchestral percussion from San Jose State University, Steve originally was self taught on drumset and through his studies has become well versed in Jazz, Cuban, Brazilian, orchestral percussion and Hindustani classical music on tabla. He is also a composer and producer. He has performed with Bobby Hutcherson, Ray Charles, Paul Horn, Deepak Ram, Othello Molineaux, Claudia Villela, Laurindo Almeida, Helcio Milito Mark Sherman, Madeline Eastman, the Monterey Symphony, Santa Cruz Symphony and others.
