Roller Derby Boot Camp FAQ:

Q - What should I wear and bring?
A - Snug workout clothes (we practice in a community center so be mindful of the family atmosphere!)
- A spill-proof water bottle
- Band-aids or moleskin for your feet
- Skate wheels appropriate for a slick gym floor
- Full roller derby gear (see above list)

Q - What should I do before Boot Camp?
A - Review the WFTDA.com website to learn more about the skill set we play under, the WFTDA gender policy, and WFTDA insurance.
- Watch some YouTube videos of roller derby skills to see the varying levels roller derby is played at
- Join the Facebook group for Boot Campers and fill out our Pre-Boot Camp survey
- Get a friend (or several) to come with you!

Q - I haven't skated in a long time. Should I attend Boot Camp?
A - We do require 1) that you know how to STOP on skates and 2) that you can stay upright while skating forward. Other than that, feel free to join us for Boot Camp! There's no commitment required to join the league when you attend our Boot Camp. It's just to have fun, get a workout, work on derby skills, meet Roller Rioters, and make new friends!

Q - Am I too old/fat/skinny/out-of-shape/short/tall to play roller derby?
A - Roller derby is for EVERYONE. If you feel uncertain, try going to PFM Roller Derby's practices first. You don't need to pass minimum skills to join us at Boot Camp but you DO need to know how to stop on skates and how to stay upright while skating forward. If you have a hard time stopping, staying upright, and just feel like Bambi on ice, please attend PFM and consider contacting us when you feel more confident. We want you to be successful and feel awesome!

Q - Do I have to attend every session?
A - No, but if you are interested in trying out for RRR it's important to attend each night so that we can see how dedicated you are and assess that your overall skill level is a match for our training committee by the end of Boot Camp.

Q - What if someone I know is interested in becoming a referee?
A - They can still attend Boot Camp as a Non-Contact participant and shadow a referee during the Wrap Up scrimmage. We can work on furthering their referee education beyond Boot Camp, too! More referees is more fun for everyone. Send us an email!

Q - Do I have to have skates or other gear to attend Boot Camp?
A - Yes. We are a small team and cannot store a gear library--however, there might be gear around if you are having trouble spending money on a hobby you aren't sure you love. We know people!

Q - Can I use in-line skates?
A - Roller Derby is played on quad skates only. Referees are allowed to use in-line skates but cannot take contact in those skates.

Q - I want to buy skates and gear because I don't own any or want to upgrade. Where can I get advice?
A - There are a lot of resources online and in the Seattle area. There are skate shops in North Seattle, Renton, and Tacoma. There are groups on Facebook such as Roller Derby Recyclables and PNW Used Derby Gear. You can also ask a member of RRR if they could ask around for you. Start by making a post in the Boot Camp Facebook group.

Q - Do I have to attend Boot Camp to try out for the league?
A - We STRONGLY prefer for you to attend Boot Camp if you want to join Rainier Roller Riot this season. We also encourage 100% attendance during Boot Camp and while you are probation. Well, we encourage 100% attendance ALWAYS.

Q - Is health insurance required to attend Boot Camp or to join the league later?
A - No; however, you should understand the full risks of playing a full contact sport on roller skates. RRR will require you to sign a waiver saying you are aware of the risks of roller skating and derby and you take full responsibility for your injuries. IF YOU ARE INJURED, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR MEDICAL EXPENSES AND LOST WAGES.

Q - I'm an experienced skater who plans to try out for the league. Should I attend Boot Camp?
A - Yes! We want to see you demonstrate that you're a team player, especially when it involves skating with people who aren't as skilled as you are. We strive to create an environment where people can learn from falling and be lifted up by their teammates AND fellow Boot Campers.

We are a team of intersectional accomplices. We do not tolerate right-wing politics, ableism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, fatphobia, body-shaming, islamophobia, anti-semitism, sexism, cultural appropriation, or slurs/abuse/harassment of any kind.
