This is the fall conference of the Connecticut Social Work Oncology Group. These conferences are held twice a year on pertinent topics for oncology social workers or other health care professionals working with oncology patients. This experiential workshop provides an overview of a novel counseling intervention for patients with advanced cancer.
The presenter will be Melissa B. Weimer, DO, MCR, FASAM, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Yale Addiction Medicine Consult Service.
Dr. Weimer is board certified in Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine. At Yale, she also serves as the Medical Director of the Yale Addiction Medicine Consult Service. Dr. Weimer has a clinical and research focus on expanding access to treatment for patients with substance use disorders, particularly in the hospital setting. She also has fellowship training and years of experience in the management of complex pain, particularly for patients with concomitant opioid use disorders.
Objectives of the program: 1. Describe the current substance use disorder (SUD) epidemic 2. Recognize clinical features of SUD in patients with cancer 3. Review case examples of patients with SUD and opportunity for improved care 4. List evidence based treatments for opioid use disorder and alcohol use disorder
